How to: Choosing a roofing contractor

Choosing a roofing contractor depends entirely on you, the consumer.  Choosing the right contractor before the job will make your life a lot easier after your roof is finished and can save you considerable amounts of money in the end.

When choosing your contractor, the first thing you need to determine is what type of roof you have and what type of roofing contractor you need. For example, if you need a shingling job, you are not going to choose a contractor who specializes in rubber sheet roofing. There are contractors who specialize in shingling, others who specialize in flat roofs and yet others who specialize in steel roofs.

The contractor you choose must have the workers and equipment to complete what you need done. Let's say, for example, that you have a large roof to shingle or rubber sheet. Hiring a contractor who specializes in smaller jobs is not the smart or sensible thing to do because they will not be able to get the job done in a timely manner.  The same concept holds true if you have a small job that does not require a large crew or contractor.  Some contractors will refuse your job if they do not consider it worth their time.

Of course, affordability is the next factor to consider when choosing a contractor. Many people mistakenly assume that this is the most important factor when choosing a contractor for their roofing job. While cost is a big consideration, do not choose a contractor solely on price. There are intangibles associated with any contracting job that have nothing to do with price. The service provided by your contractor after completion can be worth more than the cost of the roof in the event that you need it. When finding out about your contractor's service policy, make sure you find out if there is any kind of a service or trip charge for fixing any potential problems that may arise; also make sure that you understand the warranty provided with your roof. If you cannot get clear, concise answers for either of these questions, continue your search until you find a contractor that you feel completely comfortable with and that sets your mind at ease. Remember, it is your money.

Several good websites let you check on a potential contractor. One is the Better Business Bureau. This site allows you to see if the company is in good standing with them and also has the number and type of complaints filed against a business in a thirty-six month period.

Another good site is Service Magic. Service Magic is a Yellow Pages for contractors located on the web and contains a myriad of information on all types of contractors. Definitely check both of these sites to assist you in your search for a reputable contractor.

Choosing the right roofing contractor for your roofing job can help avoid sleepless nights in the end and prevent unnecessary heartaches and headaches, both financial and emotional. The choice is up to you so choose wisely and carefully. Pick the contractor that meets your needs and that you feel comfortable with and the rest should fall into place. I hope this helps and happy roofing.
