Short stories: Christian

You're Too Young!

Eight-year old Sedrick Weiss was happy that his church was going to be having a visiting pastor come and hold evangelistic meetings. His father would be leading out in the song service and Sedrick was told to sit in the front row so his father would know where to find him.

Night after night Sedrick listened to the message as the visiting pastor preached to the people at the Honey in the Rock Hotel. The visiting preacher had Sedrick's daddy dim the lights each night so he could show a slide show while he talked about many interesting subjects.

Each night Pastor Stanton shared many things with the people out of the Bible. He talked about God, about the creation of the world, about Jesus' death for sinners, and he also talked about Heaven.

One night one of the babysitters was sick so Sedrick helped his mother babysit the children.

"Sedrick, can you teach the children 'Grey Squirrel'.

"Okay," Sedrick replied. "Okay everyone, stand up. Now here's how the song goes.

Grey squirrel, grey squirrel, swish your busy tail.

Grey squirrel, grey squirrel, swish your busy tail.

Wrinkle up your little nose. Hold a nut between your toes.

Grey squirrel, grey squirrel, swish your busy tail.

Sedrick then taught the children the motions to go along with the song. The children laughed at the motions of the song.

Finally, it was time for Sedrick to go back into the meeting with his father. Carefully, he walked through the darkness until he found the seat that his father had saved for him. Sedrick enjoyed helping his mother with the children, but he really liked listening to the stories that Pastor Stanton told.

Every night after the meetings were over Pastor Stanton met with the members of the local Beckley SDA church and prayed for the people attending the meetings. He prayed that they would each accept Jesus as the Lord and leader of their life.

One night Pastor Stanton prayed, "Dear Jesus, please be with these precious people attending your meetings. Help each one of them to come closer to you."

As Sedrick listened to that prayer, he felt as if God were calling him to be one of those precious people. He felt God calling him to accept the offer of forgiveness and eternal life. But a small voice inside of him seemed to say, "You're too young. You can't be a Christian until you're much older."

And yet, every night when Pastor Stanton would pray that same prayer for the people attending the meetings, Sedrick would feel impressed that the pastor's prayer was meant
