How to buy furniture for small spaces

If you have a small home, purchasing furniture for each room may be a challenge. Knowing that living in a small home reduces numerous other expenses makes it worthwhile to accept the challenge that living in a small space presents.

One obvious rule to buying furniture for any space is to measure the space available in the room. If you have a small home you probably need to include one more measurement. Be sure that the furniture you choose will fit through the doorways and around the corners that it must pass through to reach its final destination.

Furniture for small spaces doesn't have to be small itself. Large pieces of furniture can function well in a small room but you need to limit the number of items you attempt to include in the room. You also need to consider whether you will want to rearrange the furniture periodically or if you will be comfortable with it remaining in the same place indefinitely.

A piece of furniture that can serve more than one purpose is an ideal choice for a small room. A bench that doubles as a storage unit or tables that have tops that lift up to reveal a storage area are good choices. You can select multi purpose ottomans. In addition to providing storage space, they can be slid under a table out of the way and brought out to serve as extra seating space.

Bookcases work well in small spaces. However, you need to be careful not to let clutter accumulate on the shelves. Use the shelf space wisely and in an organized way. Placing lots of little decorative items or collectibles on the shelves will give a small room a cluttered appearance.

Utilize the height of a room. A tall narrow bookcase or chest can provide useful space. Put an eye catching object on top of the furniture or on the wall above it. That will direct one's gaze upward and the room will seem larger.

It is a good idea to create visual diversity in a small space through the use of texture rather than color. Limit the number of colors you choose for the room so that the room doesn't have a chaotic feel to it. Let the upholstery of the furniture or the bed coverings, pillows, and rugs give the room personality.

The use of reflective items such as glass top tables, cabinets with glass or mirrored doors, and silver or chrome shelves will help a small space appear large.
