Video game reviews: Doom 3

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT.

Doom has been around in one form or another since 1993 when it first was launched on an unsuspecting world via shareware by its fledgling group of creators, known as id. I first came across the game some years later on the original Play station and for a short while was hooked. In this form it was basically a low on thought, high on body count first person shooter game that seemed to have evolved from ideas and a play style that were first to be found in Wolfenstein. In Doom you were a high tech marine armed to the teeth and working your way through an alien labyrinth populated by tricks, traps and most of all a whole host of creatures to kill. What now stands before you as you take the disc from the box is the grandson of that original creation, place the disc in the X-box, fire it up and enter the world of Doom 3.

IS THERE LIFE ON MARS? (YES, TO DAMN MUCH OF IT)

Welcome to Mars, you are a newly arrived marine, one of the toughest and best trained military men in the galaxy reporting for duty at a research facility on the red planet. Upon your arrival you are sent to investigate anomalies that are becoming apparent around the base. It turns out that a massive incursion of demons has broken through into our reality and is swarming through the premises killing and spreading mayhem and chaos. As one of the few survivors only you, admittedly with enough firepower to take over a small African country, stand between Hell and Earth. So the scene is set and off you go a one-man killing machine off to save a futuristic world. If it sounds a bit close to the mark of Halo, then that's because it has a lot in common. It is less military based, more based around horror, very atmospheric and edgy, but essentially not a million miles away from the Master Chief and his battles against the covenant. That's not a bad thing in my book, if you like one then you will probably like the other.

SO WHAT DOES THIS BUTTON DO?

As you would expect if you have played the original, the game controls are very straight forward, selecting weapons and moving about cover most of the buttons on the controller, zoom, crouch and jump and that's about it. Two interesting buttons are the white and black buttons on the bottom right of the pad. The white is for a flashlight. This is an essential item as some of the areas of this base are in total darkness and the light is the only way that you are going to find your way about. The downside of this function
