Poetry: This life

by Alexis Jardin

I gave up everything to come here,

knowing I wasn't ready to face everything I fear.

The world was big and scary,

pain and death was nothing,

like I'd seen on Tom & Jerry.

High school never prepared me

for all the problems I've had to face,

there is crime, scams and poverty

all over the place.

Even the schools try to take all of your money,

their venomous words,

about futures,

are laced with honey.

Nothing seems to feel right,

the signs are never around to tell me when truth is in sight.

But I've fought my way through,

taken this new life step by step,

shoe by shoe.

I've survived all the trama,

and faced this world's poor actors,

bad lighting and rose to the top,

in this life's very own soap opera.
