Understanding school phobias

"Mama, I don't want to go to school any more!" How many times as parents have we heard that statement? Too often we ignore it. Wake up, parents! This is a warning that something is not right with your child. Children are usually great at expressing themselves. We must learn to listen and pay attention to what our children are saying. It's time to go sleuthing!

There could be a number of reasons for a child who ordinarily likes school to suddenly not want to go anymore. Bullying is usually the number one reason. Take the time to sit down with your child and ask him or her, why. Sometimes it may take a bit of cajoling to get your child to open up to you. Once they do, try to find a way together to come up with a solution to the problem. Explain to your child what a bully is and why it is wrong to be one. Give suggestions on how to handle a bully, such as, ignoring them, or reporting it immediately to a teacher or bus driver, or another adult such as a parent. Make it known to your child that they may come to you whenever a difficult or "scary" situation comes about.

Allergies and colds are another reason kids may seem less inclined to want to go to school. For instance, a child may temporarily develop a decline in hearing due to severe colds or allergies. Problems hearing correctly can interfere with their school work, resulting in decling grades. Besides the normal discomfort that is obvious with colds and allergies, and the possible decline in hearing, other things may be happening which can also scare a child. Allergies can also interfere with sight. A blurring of the eyes or constant watering of the eyes can also discourage a child. Being an observant parent can alleviate the build-up of problems such as these. If your child should exhibit any of these symptoms, be sure to take them to their physician for proper care. If left untreated, permanent hearing damage and further eye problems can result.

Stress...too much homework is expected! As kids advance a grade, the workload can become frightening to them. Know what to expect before your child enters a new grade. Talk with other parents and with teachers in advance as well as during the school year. Help your child by encouraging them to complete homework assignments. Let them know that you are interested in learning with them. Try to remember how overwhelming it was for you when you were going to school! Constant encouragement helps to keep discouragement away! Let your child know that you are proud of them and that you will be there for them whenever they need you.

Keep in mind that whatever the reasons for your child's reluctance to attend school, it is your responsibility to find and correct the problems that arise. Talk with your children and listen to them, especially if you notice any changes in attitude toward school or anything else! Kids need parents to be parents! Don't be afraid to become involved.
