Poetry: Forgiveness

The Reset Heart

It's there again ... that stabbing, searing pain.
It comes in waves that threaten every peace.
It comes in dreams and thoughts and smells and taste;
Repeating, lingering, on reason's edge!

I close my eyes, the searing light invades my soul.
I open them and darkness betrays my spirit.
Awake and my mind seeks the slavery of sleeping;
Asleep and my dreams seek the freedom of daybreak

Is the passage of time my only recourse;
Is there a salve to my pain I can't see?
Can I hope to absorb and accept it?
Is a remedy there in the offing?

Will an answer be found in my tormentor's mouth?
Will the mouth that once spoke love express love again?
Is there even as much as a drop full of trust
To believe that those shared lips can share ought but pain?

No! I'll open my fragmented heart's door!
Striding head high, determinedly through it;
I'll only reach back to pull the door tight.
I will not look back through eyes or my soul!

But this heart is still crushed and hemorrhaging torment;
How can it be mended in this vacuum of me?
Will this partnerless journey find navigation?
Interrogatory hell, absent all rejoinders!

I need a new heart or at least one renewed;
Too easy to say, God will fix my heart.
Is God's love enough or am I too human
With honest aspersions to Almighty love?

If love had been lost to just death or to drifting
It surely would not be as painfully present
Being lied to and played and the ache of regret
Is the proof that affection was not ever there!

The first step to wisdom is found in regret
That tells us our choice lacked sagacity
Pointing back to our heart as the issue,
The source of renewal, an answer peeks free!

Can we see the faint hope that our heart can reset?
It's not easy, takes time, a fierce resolution!
There's hope for renewal or maybe much better;
A baby soft new heart that's healed and reborn.

But won't there be scars? Can that be avoided?
The inevitable query resounds.
Yes! And scars that characterize your heart
Will be honored fully for doing their part!

Can we comprehend how to celebrate scarring?
Do we have an example of how this could be?
We do! His name's Jesus. See his hands and his feet
And his side that was pierced. Were those scars left in vain?

So the answer is found in Jesus' scars
And in why he consented to have them.
He died to forgive us and give us new hearts
To give us a choice to make our lives whole.

And the scars must remain!
But they are celebrated!

His death was the plan that can be emulated
The forgiveness he offered is surely the key
When we offer like he did, forgiveness in pain
To the one who torments, breaking our heart in twain.

When we let Jesus handle the justice,
When we give up our own need for vengeance,
We release our torment and tormentor,
Freeing ourselves from the prison of us!

Its a process that will have to be repeated
Each second, each minute, each day, each month, each year,
Until His sweet nature transforms our brand new hearts;
Resets the capacity to love and be loved ...

Yet, while scars must remain;
THEY WILL BE CELEBRATED!
