To understand Salmon fishing on a river, let me take you to a quiet place where the air is clean, the water is cold, and there is wildlife around. Not just weird people in orange hair, I'm talking about cougars, moose, and Bears. True wildlife, a place where you realize humanity isn't the only complex animal on this planet. You also have to get up fairly early to appreciate everything, salmon fishing on the river isn't only about catching fish, it's mostly about preparation.
Depending on where your at, I live in the Northwest British Columbia, so for us salmon fishing is a way of life. For those however, not accustomed to the thrill of catching a fifty pound Chinook, twenty pound Coho, five to seven pound sock-eye, or the indomitable humpies or pinks, you have to understand throwing your line in the river is only part of it.
River fishing for salmon has two large drawbacks;
1. The fish are not going after food because in their minds is nothing but going back to their ancestral home to spawn.
2. The best places to fish for spawning salmon usually involve places where other predators are as well. By this I mean Bears.
Here is a good video to see what I mean about the bears on a river filled with salmon.
If you have a boat then you do not have to bother with the second point. But my point is to be aware of wildlife while your on a river that has any kind of food possibilities. I have seen many Bears swimming in our river right next to the boat, so be aware.
The main point however, is to be prepared, with gear, food, and a healthy respect of the fish. Salmon have been around for along time, and they are truly amazing fish. They are one of the tastiest, as well as some of the healthiest fish you can eat. From the Omega 3 to the sweet tasting meat, your in for a treat if you can land one of these fish.
Below I will give you the Basics of River fishing for salmon. One the ocean the rules change dramatically as the salmon are much easier to hook, but harder to get in. If you want to have a good trip charter a boat for salmon fishing and enjoy. You will have to be in a Northern Coastal (from Oregon to Alaska, or Russia in the North, or Eastern Coast Maine to Newfoundland) area, in order to enjoy the best fishing.
1. The fishing pole.
You will have to spend at least $150 to get a decent salmon rod. It should be able to withstand catching a fish of at least 100 pounds, no salmon usually weighs that much but its better to be safe than sorry. I know many guys who used
