Poetry: Truth

by Christine Holleyman

Created on: September 16, 2009

The earth has been consumed by a famine.
Centuries ago it dried up,
for all its water evaporated from it.
The earth became a desert,
a wilderness, desolate,
with no moisture in it.
No wheat was grown for bread
because there was no water.
Every fruitful vine withered,
became brown,
the dead leaves crackling in the dry heat.
Every tree shed its leaves and died
for there was no sustenance for its roots.

Starvation became rampant.
People throughout the whole earth died
because there was no bread to eat
and no water to drink.
Death spread its dark wings
over all the inhabitants of the earth
and would let no light through them.
There was a lack in the whole earth
of a life-giving substance;
the earth dried up like a prune for the lack of it.

People could not live in the heat
and the dryness;
they consumed away on their feet
and died.
Their whitened and dried bones
lay scattered over the whole world;
they rattled and bumped against one another
as the hot south wind blew through them.
Can dead men see?
Can dead men hear?
Can dead men praise and give glory
to the name of the Living God?
God is not the God of the dead,
but of the Living.

Do you yet not understand
what that Living Water was
that evaporated from the earth
and caused Death to overtake every living thing in it?
Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
It's been proclaimed throughout the world,
and no one has taken it to heart.
Have you never heard
that the Word was lifted up
for men to gaze upon,
to spit upon,
to be mocked at
and to be held in derision?
Have you not heard
that both Jew and Non-Jew alike
crucified the Word?

How many years has it been
since the Word of God came
and spoke to a prophet in the world?
How many years has it been
since any Word has been added
to the Holy Scriptures?
Why has none been added?
It is because there has been no Word
from the mouth of God
to any inhabitant of the world.
The prophets in the Bible prophesied it;
they foretold of a time
when there would be no prophets.
They also said our own Father
would take His name from our memory,
and He accomplished it.
The Word was crucified,
killed by the world,
and the Word was taken up from the world.

And then how the children
of the bride chamber did mourn!
The Bridegroom was no longer with them,
and they fasted continuously,
for there was no Bread to eat.
The night overtook them.
They became engulfed in darkness,
for the Light had been taken out of the world.
In that long night,
no man could work.
The Word said,
"Man does not live by bread alone,
but by every word
that proceeds out of the mouth of God."
