Hope for newly diagnosed MS patients

I have MS. Now what do I do?

I have had Multiple Sclerosis for 16 years now and when I was diagnosed I tried to research as much as I could about the disease and found a lot of technical answers but could not find anything from a real person that has been living with the disease. I wanted to know what life had in store for me and to hear someone's story about how MS has affected their life. I wanted to hear how they handle the difficulties that come up with their disease. I had a hard time finding such an article to help me so I am going to share on a personal level what my biggest battle with MS has been.

I am not a health professional and do not claim to be knowledgeable in all of the medications and treatments for MS. I can only share a personal story of how I have learned to live with my disease and hope that this article may bring some comfort to newly diagnosed people that feel like they have just been handed a death sentence which, by the way, you have not! Your life and the way you do things will change but you can still lead a very productive, satisfying life.

When I finally got my diagnosis of MS, to tell you the truth, I was relieved. I know that may sound strange but considering the other things they were testing for were all very fatal diseases and at least MS was something that was workable. During this time I was going through a divorce and had 2 young children and didn't know what I was going to do. I guess my ex husband was my motivator because there was no way on this Earth I was going to let him raise my Children. He was a physically abusive person and I could not let my kids go through that any longer. I started looking in to anything that would help with my symptoms and let me live a semi normal life and raise my kids. I tried Evening Primrose Oil, St John's Wort and a few other vitamin or herb type products which didn't really help me too much. I went through aggressive IV steroid therapy which made me very sick. I am not saying that these will not work for you, they might. This was my experience with them. I tried a few other homeopathic remedies and it wasn't until a light bulb went on inside my head did I realize the saying that I faithfully live by to this day. I HAVE MS, MS DOES NOT HAVE ME!

I want you to read that statement again and say it out loud. You need to realize that all the medications in the world may help but until you accept your disease for what it is and learn to go with the flow you will continue to fight a long, hard,
