How to achieve the health and well-being you desire and deserve

by Theresa Sykes Brittany

Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual health and well-being make up the essence of our energetic system as a human being. How do you achieve the health and well-being you desire and deserve? First, take a look at the big picture and identify the obvious ways that you are not honoring yourself in each of these areas. Perhaps you are doing well in one area but not so much in another? It's vital that all areas be accessed and addressed since they all work together and when one is out of balance the others are impacted.

Imagine only putting oil in your automobilenot putting gas in the tank, or air in the tires, just oil. It may run very well for a time and you may feel excited because you are doing so well with the oil. Eventually, of course, the vehicle will stop or not function optimally. This is because only one aspect of its needs was being addressed. Quality of attention is important as well. The vehicle will respond differently to engine oil as compared to cooking oil!

If you think of yourself as an amazing machine that requires attention to function optimally and then you actually take the healthy actions that you know to take, your experience of optimal health and well-being will become a reality.

Ask yourself right now: What action do I know that I need to take for my physical health that I have not yet taken? It's not a matter of not knowing. It's a matter of not doing. Many people already are very clear about what needs to be happening, yet they will spend time reading about it, talking about it, journaling about it, even watching other people do it. This, over time, is merely a sophisticated ploy to avoid taking the action now. What is yours to do? Eat healthier? Exercise more? Exercise differently? Stretch daily? Breathe deeply? Soak in the tub? Get a massage? Take a vitamin? Just do it and, each day, continue to do it.

Emotionally, what is most important to you? Connecting with friends? Family? Nature? Receiving hugs or healthy touch? Feeling safe to express your deepest emotions and being heard? Feeling supported by friends? What is it for you? Are you doing that? When is the last time you did that? One's emotional system is just as vital to pay attention to as the physical system. One's feelings directly impact the body and visa-versa. How are you feeling your feeling? Or not?

How does one care for oneself mentally? Do you believe that if you thought to yourself all day long I am such a loser. I am a failure. I messed up again that it would be healthy for your mentally? Emotionally? Physically? Some people think these types of internal thoughts for years on end and then wonder why they feel depressed and have ulcers and migraines. Your thoughts are very powerful and there are ways to care for your mental system that are healthy. Identify the self-criticisms within, change your message to yourself and then practice replacing the judging thoughts with the affirming ones. It may be tricky at first because, often, people don't even hear these underlying internal dialogues. For every negative: news story, news article, or conversation you engage with; read positive literature, poetry, a daily thought or express out loud what you are grateful for in your life today. Feed your mental system food to grow on and you will feel better emotionally and physically.

Spiritually, are you being fed? What does that even mean to you? What brings you peace, belonging, calm, connection? What do you hang onto when everything seems to be falling apart? Perhaps you could foster a more intimate relationship with this source of comfort on a daily basis. Many people only turn to the spiritual aspect when there is a crisis. What would it be like to feed your spirit each day? It could be as simple as taking the time to feel your heart beating in your chest and feeling grateful for the energy that flows through you to create the heartbeat, watching a sunset, stepping outside at night to look at the stars just because you can, touching the earth with your bare feet and feeling yourself being held.

Each of these four areas is just as important as the other in considering your overall health and well-being. You get to choose how you want to create you life. Choose well!
