Bible study: Understanding the Book of Revelations.

by Margaret Radisich Sleasman

First, it is the Book of Revelation (singular) and not Revelations (plural); it is the final letter from God revealing what is to come. The Book has a promise as well as a curse to the readers and we should be aware of these. Rev. 1:3 says, "Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand." and then in Rev. 22: 18-19 says, "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."

We all like the blessing, but we have a tendency to ignore or gloss over the curse. This is a very serious curse made by the God of Heaven to warn us not to change anything in His Holy Word, and especially in the Book of Revelation. Back when the scholars put the books of the Bible they were very careful in their study and interpretations of the Greek and Hebrew when translating into English. The OLD King James is the most accurate translation of the scholars' works. The problem lies in the English language where; for example "if" means maybe. In Greek and Hebrew "if" has several meanings including "if, and it is so. When the scholars translated to English, they had footnotes as to the origins of the "if" word in that particular verse and what it meant. Most of the other translations we have today, do not take this into consideration and so we find ourselves in a very messy situation. I know many who have become Christians with other versions and who use other versions, they are still Christians and their version is still God's Word, but they are missing many blessings in the translation meanings. Unfortunately, some of these versions leave out important scripture or make changes in a verse because it may sound better or shed more light on a verse. This is changing God's word and carries the curse of Revelation 22:18-19 and is very dangerous territory to tread.

I am by no means an expert in Greek or Hebrew and actually know very little, but I do know that the Old King James is as close as we can be, so I would not want to trust any other version. Many say "truth is relative", this is true; what I believe is true may not be what you believe is true. The problem is that we need to believe what God says is true and not skip verses or go to other translations because we do not like what is being said. When I read Rev. 22: 18-19, I want to be sure that I am not being cursed for what I believe is the truth; I want it to be the whole truth before I believe it.

I began reading the Book of Revelation when I was nine and not a Christian; not only that, it was a Catholic Bible so there were many inserts and deletions. I really had no idea what I was reading and understood nothing, but it intrigued me enough to read it several times in my pre-teen years. I did not become a Christian until I was 30, but I believe that my early interest in Bible reading played a dominant part in seeking the Lord. I never had a problem with the Trinity, or that God never changes - He is the same yesterday, today, and forever - because of my Catholic upbringing, I believed everything in the Bible to be true - literally true. So you see, even reading an incorrect version can lead you to the Lord, but when you want to know more of the Lord and develop a relationship with Him, you need to read and study as close to possible the true and correct Word of God.

The Book of Revelation is a complicated book and really cannot be understood without taking the rest of the Bible into consideration. Most of the Old and New Testament books are referenced in the Book of Revelation to corroborate what is said. This is not just some wild-vision of a man on the Island of Patmos; this is a God-given revelation to the apostle John. He was commanded to write what he saw even though he did not understand what he was seeing, he described his vision the best he could using "like as" when describing something he saw that was way to far into the future for him to comprehend.

I have read the Book of Revelation many, many times and each time some new blessing is revealed. I am not saying a new revelation, because it is not, it is the same as it was when John wrote it, nothing new. But God in His magnificent wisdom reveals a little blessing at a time to those who keep reading and studying this book and the rest of His Word. God's promises are good, they are true, and what He promises, He will do. The same also goes for His curses; this should make us seek Him and be good stewards of His Word, not believing every preacher that comes along with a convincing sermon, but to open the Bible and see if what every sermon you may hear is true.
