Finding a Queen
One day many, many years ago, the kingdom of Tharstig was alive and vibrant with the optimistic buzzing of the bees and the dancing of the birds under the dazzling blue sky. It was early Springtime and this was signified by the blossoming trees and freshly grown green grass that spread itself across the valleys and beyond.
Prince Damien, however was not feeling quite so rejuvenated. He stared gloomily out the tiny window in the loft of Tharstig Palace, resenting everything in his view, for it all contradicted his bleak mood. Why wasn't the sky grey and raging with howling winds and ruthless torrents of rain? Oh, how he detested the sunshine! He loathed the peasants in the villages below, gaily skipping about in celebration of the season that precipitated the arrival of summer. Prince Damien scowled and turned away from the window. The stark dankness and darkness of this loft was much more aligned with his inner turmoil.
Prince Damien wondered where his family was and why they had not disturbed him yet. Probably too caught up in all the silly festivities, he thought. Prince Damien's father, King Lucifer, was a proud, magnificent man and greatly respected by all the people of Tharstig. It was his wisdom and fierce determination that had contributed to Tharstig's victories in wars with many other kingdoms - for that reason, Tharstig was very prosperous. King Lucifer wished for nothing more than to leave a great legacy behind him - in the form of his son, who would wear his crown and continue to conquer the world in his footsteps. Prince Damien's mother, Queen Emerald was an elegant, refined woman who loved nothing more than hosting lavish dinner parties and embroidering exquisite quilts. Prince Damien's sister was the exact image of her mother, with long, golden tresses and cherry-red lips. It wouldn't be long now before she was swept off her feet by a handsome prince, Prince Damien thought bitterly.
The crimson tablecloth was laden with delicacies and the finest silver. The chandelier hung overhead, alight with candles. To the casual onlooker, it would have appeared as if a festive occasion was underway. However, on this particular evening, King Lucifer had insisted that his beloved wife did not invite any guests. Not even the new bishop?! she had protested. But as he said, It's time we had a private dinner, for a private discussion about an urgent family matter.
As Prince Damien would soon discover though, this urgent family matter was him.
