October 11, 2009 is just around the corner now, and helium.com will be 6 years old on that day. For your first Birthday, out of over 200,000 family members, 36 of the writers lucky enough to have found you, and to have been accepted into your loving embrace, saw fit to write you a Birthday card. Last year, with writers joining up at record paces, you received but one
Birthday card! This surely must be a mistake, some sort of oversight or error on the writer's parts.
Oh well, I did not want to make you feel bad, I just wanted to understand why all of the people who have been published because of you, the people who have had money placed in their bank accounts because of you, and the people who are no longer alone or bored with life because of you. Because of you. Last year (2008), your one Birthday card was sent in by this skinny little four-eyed shin-kicker, (and, hey! It's rated in first place!), and all year-long I awaited more entries, wanting to see how the other writers responded.
They responded, but not as I thought. I thought for your Birthday you should get heart-felt thoughts and thank-yous. I received over 40 emails about that Birthday card, all positive and well thought out - they could have written a Birthday card for you in the time that it took them to write the emails, so I came to this conclusion; You are now above yourself, and have become part of the writers. The writers are no longer a part of you!
Does that mean that this Birthday Boy is now in Deity status? Should we all bow to our knees to the image of write, learn and earn. Or as it is now; learn what you need, share what you know. Well, as usual (and as all of your siblings who know of me shall attest to), I do digress. Happy Birthday, Helium! I hope that your continued success in the publishing industry grows in unheralded bounds (my wallet could surely use it...). I hope, beyond all that I hope for, that your skinny little, four-eyed shin kicker of a writer/friend/Steward/Mentor (unofficially, but loving it!)/facilitator's sake, your income stream grows and grows.
I know, Mom always said I was greedy.
So, for a little fun, shall we have a few cold ones down at the Riverside Inn? I owe you at least that, for all that you have done for me. When family and friends turn their back on the disabled, as they usually do out of fear that they may become what they see, you open your doors and say welcome home. You have a heart of gold, even though it may be copper that you pay us with.
From your little brother...
Marc (yes, my real name!)
