Not many films that open with male frontal nudity in the first few scenes go down well with me. In fact, I would be pushed to find another which even has a similar theme during the opening sequences. Things go from bad to worse as we are 'treated' with another couple of bouts before too much longer. I guess you could call this setting the scene but it does seem a peculiar series of events. It begs the question, is this sort of thing really needed, or should we hold no toleration for such antics? I am going to put my neck on the line here and say it isn't a massively bad thing, as it collectively adds up to collate to the complete and utter craziness of the film. That is a lot of 'C' words, but I do genuinely think that 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' is just one long unfortunate adventure that seems to tolerate pretty much everything, from small, obsessed Superbad-destined waiters, the English comics looking for their flip flops, to a man eating literally millions of what can only be seen as multi coloured Cheerio's.
Anyway, this is sharply forgotten about as the film gets into its stride and we begin to realise that this is certainly going to be a hilarious roller coaster ride from start to finish. I can remember watching this at the cinema and it had the whole crowded audience in fits of laughter throughout, including myself! Don't be put off by thinking it is one of those cheap, silly comedies where the laughing is more due to slapstick and frustration than actual humour, because this has a real talent written into the script. Intelligent, witty, and downright hilarious series events repeatedly crop up with the main man, Jason Segal, always at the centre of attention.
Speaking of him, I suggest it be a good place to mention that prior to this, I had not really taken notice of him directly, and he was relatively unknown to me. After seeing the production though, I would definitely be interested in watching any performance with him in, as I thoroughly enjoyed and respected his acting and found him to be a very good comedy portrayer indeed. Although a big man, capable of fending for himself, there was an awe given off that made you appreciate and understand his dismay, almost feeling sorry along with him at times, and this was a very clever thing to draw people into the movie.
The lady behind the title, Sarah Marshall, played by Kristen Bell was the girlfriend who chose ending her five and a half year relationship in exchange for a new, sprightly affair with Russell
