Poetry: On poems

by Carole Somerville

For a poem to grow the writer must know

How to nurture an idea and develop it so

Words are woven and a message is spoken.

Thoughts flow and are best left unbroken

Leave it to the unconscious mind to find

A way to portray, interlace and bind

Words so they reach the heart of those who read

Bring pleasure as they watch the seed

Unfold into a magical work of art

(Or an untidy mess for someone to tear apart!)

We write about life, its joys and its pain

We tackle subjects that challenge the brain.

Fun and laughter that lighten the mood

Fantasy, romance, animals, even food!

We confront cruelty, spite and the dark side of life

May reveal a piece of ourselves we choose not to hide

The pleasure is yours, the pleasure is mine

If a poem means something to someone in a moment of time.
