Evil exists because Lucifer, the highest angel of God, rebelled against God. He thought he was better than God. As the result of that, he persuaded some angels to be on his sides and declared war in heaven. God won the battle and cast Lucifer, who is now called Satan, out of heaven and sent him to live in hell instead destroying him completely. God also cast out some of the angels, which is now called demons, whose were the followers of Satan. Evil existed from that day on.
Now, even though evil existed, Satan could not think how to spread evil into the world and could not think how to destroy what God had created until God created Adam and Eve. After God created them, He also made them to be the rulers of all things that God had created. I assume that God loved Adam and Eve the most out of all His creation, and Satan wanted to destroy them because He hated God. He wanted to take away what God loved the most.
As God created Adam and Eve in His own image and commanded them not to eat the fruit from the tree in the middle of the Garden of Eden, which was the tree of life and knowledge of good and evil, for they would die (Genesis 2:9, 15), Satan was in the Garden. Satan was transformed into the serpent in order to tempt Eve to eat the apple from the tree that God told them not to eat the fruit from the tree that God told them not to eat. Eve took a bit of an apple after Satan told her that she would not die but would be like God, knowing good and evil. Adam also took a bit of an apple that Eve gave him, and suddenly, their eyes were opened and they recognized that they were naked. They quickly covered themselves with fig leaves (Genesis 3:1-6).
As Adam and Eve heard God walked into the Garden, they hid because they were naked. God called them, and they answered what they had done. As the result of their disobedience, they were cast out of the Garden forever by God (Genesis 3: 8-21) and evil were spread throughout the world. We know the knowledge of good and evil.
From the story of Lucifer and the story of Adam and Eve, I now ask myself why God let evil exists even though He is so powerful. I believe God wants us to have freedom to choose what is good and evil and be willing to choose what is good instead of forcing us to choose what is good. What I mean is that since God is so powerful, He must know everything. Yes, He knew Lucifer was going to rebel Him and Adam and Eve was going to disobeyed Him in the beginning of time, but God did not destroy them. Why? It was because God gave them period of time to choose either the path of destruction or the path of life before the end of the world. He wanted them to have freedom to choose instead of treating them like robot. The principle is same for us. Even though evil exists, and we have the knowledge of good and evil, God still gives us time to choose either the path of life or the path of destruction before we die and before the final deliverance of Christ's return.
God still gives us time on earth the freedom to choose good or evil, the path of life or death before the end of the world. According to the book of Revelation, there will be a new city coming down from heaven, where no evil and evildoers can enter into the city.
