Making your own choices

by Tonia Hooper

Choices, we make them every day, are you making the right choices for your life? One choice you have is the power to choose your way of thinking; if you choose to think in a positive light you have the power to literally change your life. How many times have you been down in the dumps or just generally not having a great day and had someone say to you just think positive? I have to admit that has been me more times that I care to think of. However, I have come to realize (as most people learn these lessons with age) that my attitude and outlook on life is my choice. Therefore, it is my choice to be happy; it is my choice to have a great day. Life is about choices, indeed we are all faced with a multitude of choices daily, and it is so with your attitude: you can choose to have a positive or a negative attitude. Eleanor Roosevelt is quoted as saying remember no one can make you feel inferior without your consent. If we all learn to view life's mistakes as opportunities to learn from and thereby gaining valuable life experience and improving ourselves, then those mistakes would be much easier to weather.

I like to begin my day with my 'me time' on my drive in to work. I use this half hour to pray for my kids, husband, family, etc; I also use this time to get mentally prepared for my day, no matter what the day may bring my way, I tell myself that I can handle it. I tell myself that today will be a great day; I will strive to learn something new; and I will make an effort to smile and be kind to others, even when it is hard to do so. I have found that my day usually has a positive outcome if I go into the day with a positive attitude. If somehow the day takes a negative turn, I tell myself that tomorrow is another day and another opportunity to make it a great one!

Positive thinking and negative thinking are both contagious. In some way, large or small we all affect the people that we come in contact with, and vice versa. If you have negative thoughts, words and attitudes you are more likely to be a negative, pessimistic and therefore miserable person. Negative thoughts breed more negative thoughts which in turn lead to failure, frustration and disappointment. To avoid negative thoughts and all of the consequences they produce, you will need to work hard at re-training your brain to think positively. Attitudes and thoughts do not change overnight, so do not become discouraged when you do not see instant results. Remember the saying: anything worth having is
