When you are feeling miserable and bloated, you really don't want to waste time thinking about what caused your discomfort. You want relief NOW! So, I am going to start with some quick, natural remedies to get rid of that bloated feeling as quick as possible. After you have gotten some relief, you can read about the causes and some natural ways to prevent bloating from occurring again in the future.

Fast natural relief from bloating can be achieved by doing the following:

1) Applying a hot water bottle to your abdomen.

2) Stretch up, up, up a few times.

3) Take a short walk.

4) Massage your abdomen using circular motions.

5) Take a warm bath.

6) Drink warm water with cinnamon and honey,

7) Drink some warm herbal tea - chamomile, peppermint, ginger, sweet fennel, licorice root, and bay leaf are all good herbal teas for relieving bloating.

8) Activated charcoal - available in pill or capsules (do not use cooking charcoal!)

9) Herb capsules containing any of the following herbs - burdock, pasque flower, slippery elm, or tumeric.

If you only occasionally have a problem with bloating, you probably do not need to worry too much about prevention. However, if bloating is a common problem for you; you need to find out the cause of your bloating so you can eliminate the problem.

Some common causes and natural remedies are:

1) Too much food at a time - smaller portions and more frequent meals will help this.

2) Gas - some foods naturally seem to produce huge amounts of gas as soon as they get to the stomach - beans, cabbage, etc. Keep a food diary for 14 days and see if your diet includes a lot of these foods. If this seems to be the problem, reduce the amounts of these foods and replace them with something else. an example would be to replace beans with brown rice.

3) Air - this is different from gas. This is caused by swallowing air with your food and in your beverages. Stay away from carbonated drinks, make sure food is fully chewed; and breathe out just before you swallow. Do not talk while eating and do not drink through a straw. Smoking and gum chewing may also cause excess air to be swallowed.

4) Allergies, Intolerances and Sensitivities - This occurs either when your body is unable to digest a particular food (gluten or lactose)or it has a reaction and produces histamines. With this type of problem, it can be a reaction from food or beverage that was eaten as long ago as 48 hours and adding more at a meal just makes it worse or aggravates it. If you think this
