The dangers of politicizing the issue of global warming

by Ian S. Newnham

There are a surprising number of world leaders who believe that a global government is the only way that mankind can mange the future. Many have been seeking the cause celebre to provide the catalyst for its inclusion on the agenda of the worlds countries.

Global Warming is that cause, and the debate is so politically driven that any vestiges of good scientific application has been lost to the spin-doctors. There are untold examples of where data has been presented as a matter of fact when it is, at best,a probability and at worst a complete fabrication of the known information.

This is because political leaders are seeking not a debate on the scientific evidence but a promotion of what best suits their political vision of the future. Major research groups are being compromised on funding if the data is not manipulated to mesh with the desired political vision.

We, the people, are being subjected to a propaganda campaign on the assumption that the evidence is so complicated and so chilling that we cannot be relied on to interpret it adequately so the various agencies have to do that and present their results in the manner that is decreed.

Any scientists who queries initial assumptions of input data that drives complex computer modelling is marginalised by either a drop in funding or a relocation. Science is supposed to be truth, but not in this case, "truth" is what the proponents want it to be. A recent political paper used to fuel the debate in Australia took a 100-year projection on weather patterns and used that to formulate a response via modelling. Any weather scientist would find the use of projections out that far as unusual or downright foolish. An initial adverse reaction to the methodology was mooted as a result of funding discussions.

The debate in Australia has now reached an alarming state. Passions have been released and nurtured and the fear factor has been massaged and promulgated. We are now seeing large and ugly demonstrations, as groups are demanding quicker and more forthright action to address the perceived threats. They are demanding the de-commissioning of fossil fuel production operations.

The forces are marshaling on their chosen side of the line and they will take this debate forcefully into the streets not with the passion created by good scientific review but with a politically manipulated view if what the facts are. Regrettably they will take with them a large number of well-meaning people overwhelmed by the fear programmes that have them frightened. It is ironic that had the debate started about now it would have found it difficult to get traction based on the recorded actual results of accurate temperature measurements over the last decade.

As we move forward and the demonstrations become more passionate and more damaging it will become obvious that the data used to forecast imminent chaotic world conditions have not been supported by actuality and that a massive politically agenda has been followed. What then of the damage to science and its truth.
