Being in my 40's I can look back at my twenties and smile. I realize that I am a different person. College homesickness seems like a mirage to someone at my age.
Here is how to combat it: Plain and simple send emails to your family and friends back home! Keep in touch! When you receive emails try to answer them promptly.
Call home now and then. With today's telephone wars raging, there should be some really good rates for college students. Phone companies want your business. Look for the best plan that fits you like a glove! Cell phones come in handy when away at college.
Text home. Again, look for the most affordable plan for your personal phone needs.
Utilize online social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter to keep in contact with HOME. Our technology may seem cold and distant.
Make it work to your advantage. I have found that I feel a connection with my old schoolmates using Facebook. It is as if I have daily and local contact with them, even though a high percentage of my schoolmates are either out of state or out of my immediate area. I make the time to keep in touch. You can do the same!
Keep busy with your studies and develop new friends while in college. Join groups that make you feel at home.
Keep an online journal. Write about HOME and your college experiences. Let your friends and family back home know about it and let them read about your college life.
Always remember that even though you are away from home that you carry your family and friends in your heart, mind, and soul. It sounds cheesy, but it is true. Always focus on your school work and also keep your family and friends a part of you. The mind is key to this. The heart and soul are sure to follow. Give it a try.
Wriing letters is very low tech. Especially since we live in the 21st century! Give that a try too. Sure, snail mail will take forever and a day. Waiting for a letter will add some spice to this high tech soup we spoon feed ourselves on a daily basis!
There is no need to not utilize our high tech capabilities for something good and positive.
All of this high tech can bring us closer together. It has done plenty to distance us. . . turn the tables on it.
