With the recycled air, long air time, and a large number of bodies packed into a small area, it's hard to look good after flying anywhere. It gets annoying to see celebrities getting off planes with their hair and makeup perfectly in place. When you try, your hair is dried out and frizzy, your makeup is cracking, and your legs and face are completely bloated. But fear not! There are a few ways to help battle a flying beauty fiasco:
Before you leave, use a leave-in conditioner and pull your hair back into a loose, simple twist. Make sure to pin your bangs back, or opt to use a headband (but make sure it's not too tight! Ozone found in planes can increase the effects of headaches).
Wash your face in the airport and apply an SPF moisturizer. It will lock in moisture to prevent your skin from drying out, and it will prevent you from getting a sunburn. Yes, you can get a sunburn in an airplane! Also, try not to wear too much makeup. It will get cakey and dry on a long flight.
If you must wear makeup, opt for a tinted moisturizer and some white eyeliner. Pair this with a tinted lip balm, and you'll look fabulous! If you can, bring a small travel mirror so you can reapply before you land. Remember to follow the TSA's regulations regarding your carry-on items.
Pack a scented anti-bacterial hand lotion. You'll keep smelling great, your hands and nails will stay moisturized, and you'll be keeping germs at bay.
Try to buy Evian's Travel Trio. This 3-pack of 1.7 oz bottles (perfect for travelling) are filled with refreshing mineral water. Just mist it on your face and hair throughout your flight. They'll keep your face moisturized, and they'll help with that unsightly frizzy plane hair. You can find these at your local drugstore or online for around $18.
Bring items to make you comfortable. With the recent swine flu threat, many airlines no longer offer pillows and blankets. You can easily find travel blankets and inflatable travels pillows that will keep you comfy but won't dominate your carry-on baggage. Also, you may want to bring a sleep mask and earplugs to block out your surroundings. Nothing makes you look (and feel) better than a good nap!
Whatever you do, make sure you stay hydrated! Drink water. Plain and simple. Yes, you may need to use the airplane bathroom once or twice, but it's worth it. As tempting as it is, stay away from salty snacks and anything with caffeine. With the ozone and altitude from being in the plane, they can make your hands, feet, and face swell up. You don't want that! Water will help relieve some of this bloating, but it's best to avoid it altogether.
Wear something comfortable on the plane. Sweatpants are best, but loose, comfortable jeans work too. Try to wear a looser-fitting shirt too. You don't want to be worried about your shirt riding up, or whether or not your outfit makes you look heavy. Just be comfortable! If you really want to, you can bring spare clothes in your carry-on to change into before the plane lands. Try to wear sandals or flats, since you will have to remove your shoes at security. Also, make sure to bring a sweater, since planes are usually cold!
You don't have to look like the Bride of Frankenstein when you step off a plane. It is possible to get that "I was on a plane all day but I still look cute!" look. With just a little bit of effort, you too can step off that plane looking absolutely fabulous!
