How I Met Your Mother is one of those shows where every character on there is essential to the hilarity of the show. I give the greatest praises to the show for its witty humor. You cannot just pick one of the characters because in the show each character plays off of each other.
First, there is Ted played brilliantly by Josh Radnar. He is the main guy and you have to have him. He is the focus of the show and it's about the story of how he met his wife. His relationship with the group is essential because as we find out through the episodes none of the characters would have met each other without Ted. Ted met Marshall in College and Lilly. Then because he met Lilly, Lilly went to Ted and Marshall's dorm room and met Marshall. Ted then met Barney in a bar (of course) and then he introduced Lilly and Marshall to him. Then he met Robin in the bar and they met each other's eyes from across the room and he introduced her to the group.
Next there is Robin. Colbie Smulders does such a fantastic job of playing this character. She plays Ted's girlfriend for a season and a half and was Lilly's best friend and with those relationships came many hilarious moments on television. If there were no Robin there wouldn't be all the Canadian jokes or of course a personal favorite episode of mine including a Robin Sparkles video called "Let's Go To the Mall". That continues to be a hilarious sketch in further episodes such as "Sandcastles in the Sand".
Next, I think of Lilly and Marshall as one. Jason Segal and Allison Hannigan do such a wonderful job of being the cute couple that has to do absolutely everything together. In one episode, the group talks about how they can't stay one week without each other. In a scene in the episode it shows Lilly and Marshall in the kitchen and Lilly says that she has to go get eggs and Marshall tells her that he would go with her and they walk over to the fridge together. They really mesh and do a great job. They continue to be such hilarious characters and they really play off of each other a lot throughout the seasons.
Last but certainly not least, there is Barney. He gets to do so many funny sketches such as the Price is Right where he thinks that Bob Barker is his father and so he goes on a wins the showcase showdown. Then of course there is the slap bet (also the episode with Robin Sparkles) where Marshall and Barney bet on what Robin's secret is and this has been a wonderful skatch and they still have 2 more slaps for Marshall to give Barney. To do all of his funny jokes and scenes he needs all of his co stars.
This is why I feel that you can't just pick one character because they are all absolutely fantastic and you can't have one without the other.
