To be a real success in life whether on the job, in school or at home you need to be self-motivated! Life is full of projects, goals, activities, chores, homework, and dirty work, all of which have to be done. Some of you will like more than other. But all of these things must be met with drive. If not, you will not accomplish them- or anything else, for that matter. To get the most out of a summer job, out of your studies or out of your home life, you must be able to drive yourself!
Projects I start never get finished. People over me always have to remind me to do things. I like to rest as much as I can and save the thing I have to do until someone nags at me, or at least until the last possible minute for me to get it done. Does this describe you? To some degree, it describes a lot of people.
Many workmen never rise above whatever job they may have because they have no drive, They slow down, work slowly, poke around, sit down and rest as much as they can. In other words, they must have a boss over them to drive them, or they would probably starve.
That is one reason so many must rely on them- they must be driven by one of more energy and purpose.
One-thing companies often list, as a requirement of a person interested in particular job is someone self-motivated, calling it drive, or will power- pushing you and rising above the impulse to slow down or give in to drowsiness.
What kind of employee are you?
What kind of contribution do you make to your family?
Do you find that people are constantly irritating you to get things done? Do you always need reminders?
Imagine if you were the boss and you had two employees. One takes a job that you gave him and completes it on time, another takes a job and when you need it done you notice he has barely started or he constantly comes to you with questions about how to do every little thing.
Wouldn't you feel, with the second example, that it would have been better had you just done the job yourself? Why would you surround yourself with employees like that? No boss wants to do that!
The more you don't need others to push you, to tell you what to do the more you can push and motivate yourself the more likely you are to be valued, trusted, respected and maybe even promoted by your boss.
Cultivating the characteristic of drive will make you a better employee. You will take projects handed to you and claim ownership of them. You will take personal interest in them and put a constant prod on yourself to make sure it gets done. All the while you've taken a great deal of the burden off your boss's shoulders. He or she doesn't have to constantly check up on you, or tell you how to do it enabling your boss to focus energy elsewhere, perhaps on more important projects. The business, the job environment, excels!
By employing your willpower and drive, by pushing yourself to accomplish, you will find that life is full of successes, full of goals achieved. Life will take on a magnetic energy your personality will attract others. You will be able to lead others and stir them into action. And one day you may be in a position to use that steer to stir and motivate those under you.
