Although there is no true, legal alternative to just buying music digitally to get any song you want, there are many ways of getting music legally. First of all, if you don't mind paying, just plain buy the music! You don't have to get it from iTunes or Amazon only, though. There are many sites that have cheaper music for download, such as Emusic. Another option is a music subscription service like Rhapsody, Napster, or Zune Pass. These allow you to listen and download as much music as you want for a small fee per month. Then, you can keep a certain amount of songs, depending on the plan you get.
If you don't want to pay, many of the sites I just mentioned have free trials. But that only helps you for a while, a few weeks in most cases, so you might want to look at sites with free music downloads forever, without a catch or a possible lawsuit. There are many sites that sell music, but also have free downloads, you just have to dig deep. The Amazon music store, for example has a free music option on the left side of the page. Also, you can get free music with some ad supported programs that were recently released. One of these is Qtrax. It has a library of songs that are free, but add supported. Another service is Spotify. This has not been released in very many places yet, but it is free and legal. It is very hard to figure out their way of getting money though, but it is legal.
The last way of getting free music is with music streaming services like Pandora or Last.fm. You sign up for an account and then create customizable stations based on artists or songs you like. Last.fm also has a large library of free downloads available and it also suggests relevant ones for you based on the stations you listen to. Both allow you to like or dislike a track, buy the song with iTunes or Amazon, and bookmark. This is probably the best way of getting free music .
If you want to get free, legal music there are many ways to go. All of these methods can be used for the ultimate music experience. These are the alternatives to pirating illegally and they are much better than going to jail or being sued. Have a happy musical life!
