What are the advantages of breast feeding

One of the most important first decisions you will make for your baby is how you will feed them during the first year or so of their life. More and more, doctors are encouraging mothers to breastfeed their babies. There are many different reasons behind this, and the benefits of breastfeeding may be greater than you realize.

1. Bonding

Breastfeeding is a time shared closely between mom and baby, both physically and mentally. The two are in very close contact, allowing baby to recognize mom's scent, the feel of her skin, and to hear her voice. This also gives mom that time every parent loves- a chance to adore that little bundle in your arms. What you're providing to your baby is truly a gift from you; custom made and special to the both of you.

2. Money

Your newborn will eat at least 8 times a day during the first few months of life. The average cost of a container of formula is around $20 a tub. Within a month, you could be spending nearly $160 on formula alone- not to mention the bottles needed to hold it! Breast milk is free, and requires no special preparation or containers for delivery to baby. Of course, a breast pump and a few bottles are still a nice thing to have on hand; not only in case someone else needs to watch baby for you, but so that your significant other can have the chance to give baby a meal.

3. Health

Both baby and mom can find benefits to their health with breastfeeding. Breastmilk has been shown to reduce allergies later in life, and also strengthens baby's immune system. Breastfeeding mothers have found that their risk for breast cancer is greatly reduced if they had nursed, and also were able to lose the weight they gained during their pregnancy far sooner than moms who didn't nurse. Another effect for mom? Her menstrual cycle takes longer to restart while nursing.

Nursing your child is a gift that only you can provide. Your body knows what your child needs, and produces what is needed as your baby's demands change. In either case, whether you decide to nurse or use formula, the decision is up to you. Hopefully understanding the benefits that can come from what comes from you will help in your decision. For some mothers, however, the decision isn't made by them; sometimes medical conditions make it hard for nursing to be possible. Talking to your own doctor on any possible issues that may prevent nursing is another key part in reaching your decision, but don't let that deter you from trying. The benefits that come from nursing are great for both you and your baby, both now and in the future.
