Chomp, Chomp, Chomp. That must mean Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators. If you think of all the professional sports franchises in 2008, you find a lot of disparity and teams with terrible losses and games that were pitiful. The Florida Gators which were led by former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow (and a crime that he did not win again) were undoubtedly the best team in 2008.
Their journey began with high expectations, however they were a little overshadowed by USC, OU, and UT early on the season. They were coming off of a 8 win season, and they still had the best college football player and a very potent offense and a defense that was maturing very rapidly. They won their first few games of the season and then were blindsided by a one point loss at home (which a missed extra point was to blame) to Ole Miss. Tim Tebow then gave the now famous speech about playing harder and motivating his team harder than anybody else ever.
True to his word Mr. Tebow did not let the media eat his words. Florida then started rolling oponents even worse than before the loss. They stomped the Old Ball Coach and their former coach, Steve Spurrier's South Carolina team and then easily dismissed their rivals Florida State. Their real test came in the SEC title game against Alabama where the Crimson Tide's defense was controlling Tebow and Harvin until late in the second half where Tebow once again sparked the magic and the Gators pulled away with another double digit win.
The title game seemed like it might be a test, Florida actually went into the game ranked #1 after beating the previous #1, Alabama. The Gators once again had a tough first half, but Tebow gave the second greatest speech of his life in the locker room and pumped his team up and they took the National Title. This was Tebow, Meyer and the Gators' second championship in three years. Of course Utah, the only undefeated team in the nation, and Urban Meyer's former team, did receive some first place votes, but the Gators took over 90 percent of the votes and the title as #1 out of nearly 120 teams. Now, there is no other league where you have to compete against over one hundred teams for a National Title. The Gators were the best team of 2008 and if I were a betting man then I would say they would once again rule the college ranks in 2009.
