How to market tourism

One way to market tourism is by using the Internet. Create beautiful websites, get interactive forums going and stimulate interest in your tourism product. This is advertising and good advertising will result in successful marketing. People will be attracted to the destination and go, hopefully they will them post favorable comments on the forum. Marketing is the overall, long term success and impression that a product makes and in tourism, that means what others say about the service.

When marketing tourism, it needs to be a group effort. Every single person involved in the tourism product needs to be involved in the marketing effort and realize that they are important. It needs to be a group effort. That said, people and businesses can all contribute in different ways, according to their capabilities.

A hotel or resort will market itself through magazines, travel agencies and on the Internet. The accounting office will have a marketing budget, but tourism touches everyone and everyone touches tourism. Proper marketing means teaching the staff good manners, the ground keepers and the kitchen staff need to be as polite and friendly as the receptionist and waitresses. Marketing in tourism is the whole experience, the staff need to say good morning to the guests rather than waiting on the guest to say something.

Some people in tourism will not have a lot of money for marketing, but can still market themselves anyway. A taxi driver can market himself by providing good service and talking with the customer. Volunteer information about the destination and the sites worth seeing. When doing a tour, stop and by a local snack for the passengers. It will not only get you higher tips, but also market you to others as word will spread, and in tourism word of mouth is the best marketing, provided it is good word of mouth.

It is also important to market tourism by marketing what you have, and playing down what you lack. There was a group trying to market Whale Watching, but they had very few whales and they were hard to find. They could always find dolphins and turtles. The solution? Offer Dolphin and Turtle Watching with a chance to see whales! The chance is just that, a chance, but you are offering what you have and not disappointing visitors, all important in tourism.

How to market tourism? Get everybody involved, do good advertising and make sure the good word spreads and not the bad.
