How to entertain unexpected guests

What people are concerned about most when receiving unexpected guest is - the condition of the house. Kitchens and bathrooms draw major concern, and rightfully so. You don't want "SURPRISE!" guests popping up when the housework has not been done. But people do show up unexpectedly. The school of thought should be, "it is what it is",or "what you see is what you get". After all they are the interlopers. You should not feel as if you have to apologize for your house looking "lived in".

But still you apologize for the house being such a mess. Your visitors try to lessen the impact of their surprise visit. They say that they are not there for a house inspection. Whether the housework has been done or not, you know an inspection report will be given to co-workers or mutual friends. You might want to provide refreshments and some sort of entertainment (music, movie, games) while you excuse yourself for a few minutes. Use this time to freshen up the bathroom and straighten the kitchen. All other doors can be closed. If it is going to be an extended visit, you should feed them. Pick up the phone and order something that can be delivered. No muss, no fuss.

If unexpected guests are family members, it usually does not present a problem. If you haven't seen them in a while it gives you a chance to catch up with what's going on in their lives. They can usually update you on other family members as well. If they have arrived at a time when your house is in disarray, they won't mind. The quality time spent with you is more important. And they are probably already aware of your housekeeping habits. You can be comfortable and enjoy the visit because you don't have to worry about trying to be impressive. If family guests are staying for dinner, they may offer to help you in the kitchen. Accept the help if you want it An unexpected visit can be turned into a pleasant surprise. Family members and close friends are the most likely to show up unexpectedly. They feel they don't have to make an appointment to see you. They know that even if they drop in unexpectedly , you will always be cordial.

When unexpected guests arrive at your door there's no reason to fret. Welcome them and make them feel.....at home.
