Reflections: The transformation of nature
As I wander through the woods and countryside walking the dogs it is evident every day the changes that occur in the landscape. The seasons move gently along mingling together, blending their colours and smells to tantalise our senses. How anyone can miss the orchestration that unfolds before the eyes is amazing, but I know a few years ago I was too busy to even smell the flowers or changing seasons.
The eyes have to be open, the senses alert to detect even the slightest change that Mother Nature makes to the flora and fauna around us. Today we are brought up in concrete jungles, where colour and smells centre around greys and pollution. Our foods are bought from supermarkets with limited shelf lives, so they can go off before we even get to use them. Home grown produce is a rarity, and when you buy organic you can pay large sums for the privilege of someone else growing and picking it for you.
Rain forests are under threat of being chopped down to make way for farming or building houses. The indigenous peoples of these lands are being moved on or assimilated to the new way of life, while watching their habitat change around them. Beautiful trees and plants uprooted to make someone else lots of money.
Children are not encouraged to play out in the wild as there may be risk of them damaging themselves or even being destructive to the environment. Playing in the woods can be the most exciting playground one could imagine. There is so much to use just lying around, enough for a camp, bows and arrows and anything else the imagination can conjure up. Instead they vegetate in front of a television or computer game, becoming lazy and over weight. Practical skills are lost in exchange for hand eye coordination skills, which may not be that practical in adulthood.
Nature is there for us to enjoy in all its forms, but we like to destroy and change the natural world. This is slowly killing our beautiful planet, soon there will be nothing left and we humans will expire along with everything else. Instead of changing what we have we should cherish and nurture it using only what we need. Living side by side and helping each other to grow and develop into higher beings than we already are.
