Recently, I and a friend were talking about homosexuals, and my friend said homosexuality was "unnatural." She had the audacity to repeat this while I was too astonished to make a rebuttal. Here is my reply to her homophobic statement and my feelings on homosexuality versus heterosexuality, at least from a woman's point of view. I'm not out to change anyone's minds. I just wish to set the record straight.

First of all, for a heterosexual to view homosexuality as "unnatural" makes it only fair for a homosexual to view heterosexuality as "unnatural." I mean, if homosexuals found loving heterosexual sex "natural" wouldn't they just take the easy way out and become heterosexuals?

Such heterosexuals who pride themselves in their "natural" sexual relations view homosexuality as a great break from the norm but forget to look at all the "unnatural" tenets of heterosexuality such as sadomasochism, gang rape, and incest. There are probably similar horrors in the homosexual world, but they have come to be seen, publicly at least, as heterosexual problems.

Take oral sex for example. The female kneeling to take a mouthful of male genitalia is a symbol of female oppression, and sadomasochism at it's worst. Men can get a blow job and laugh about it to their friends, but woe befall the woman who boasts about giving one. Everyone knows how to play the flute (the fellatio) but the man indulging the woman is hardly heard of (except for in the Kama Sutra maybe). Needless to say, many a heterosexual woman thinks sucking cock is enjoyable, and they cry fowl when "feminists spinsters" descend upon their beloved practice.

At the very virtue of heterosexuality is inherent inequality. Most societies of the world, in the West and in the East, are patriarchal, which means these societies are phallocentric. All everyone thinks about is the phallus. Men glorify their penises and women supposedly suffer from "penis envy" only to later long to be on the receiving end of one. Male sexuality is celebrated and encouraged, while female sexuality is shrunken and overshadowed. Heterosexuality, as a whole, seems to be leveled at the female, ready to whip her into submission. The penis itself, when used improperly, becomes a weapon of humiliation, violence and aggression.

I myself was never comfortable with the whole set-up. Between sixth grade health class and The Color Purple I realized that love was not as simple as kissing and holding hands. Love, or rather making love involved the male genitalia
