How to entertain guests on a budget

As the economy has become more unstable, many people have had to make serious cutbacks on their spending, especially on non-essentials like entertaining friends. But, these are the times when friends need to be able to have social gatherings to help forget the stress if just for a little while. Now with little money to work with a host/hostess must plan in advance and be creative and open-minded to fun alternatives.

First many start shelling out money by sending out invitations with costly postage. With computers, invitations can be sent online. Many sites offer free cards for the host to create and send out for free. Previous generations may have considered this less desirable, but with everyone trying to cut back, friends will understand and even welcome these electronic invites and the ease of reply they offer.

Certainly, feeding guests can be quite expensive. This is where advanced planning will help. First, plan a menu with less expensive entrees like chicken rather than steak. Look for delicious recipes that require fewer and more common ingredients. Next, find the best deals. If there are several guests, try shopping at wholesale centers. Be unyielding in searching for coupons and weekly market deals. Serve iced tea rather than wine. Decorate with seasonal items found around the house or create unique arrangements with mirrors and candles found at the nearest discount store instead of expensive fresh flowers.

Entertaining guests can be another costly item for the host. Going to the theater, ballet, or sporting events can cost hundreds of dollars. This is where creativity is necessary. Many activities that can provide hours of fun can be free or cost very little. It is time to bring back some of the timeless ways previous generations have entertained their guests. An evening playing card games or dominoes can be fun and allow friends to really get to know each other. There are many great board games geared for adult groups that are relatively inexpensive and truly great for small and large groups. For outdoor fun, go to a local park and set up a course to play Frisbee golf with a few sticks in the ground and a Frisbee. Many communities have free concerts and movies nights at public parks and recreation areas. Find a public garden, beach or hiking area to visit.

Although many have seen their disposable incomes greatly decreased, friendships are more important now than ever before. Time with friends is priceless but does not have to be expensive. All in all stronger friendships will most likely be built with these less expensive, yet more personable ways of entertaining friends on a shoestring budget.
