There's a tendency when you live in a city to only get to know it so well. You spend your days going from home to work to the grocery store and back. If you go out for dinner and drinks it's only as far as the neighbourhood restaurant or bar. And sometimes that can be all you have time for. the down side to this is you never become as familiar as you might like to be with the city you live in.
You might wonder "what's wrong with that?" Well, you miss out on all that your city has to offer, and getting to know it better. You miss out on benefits to your health and diet. You miss out on knowing your city's innermost secrets. You miss out on the fun there is to be had. The point is, there are so many reasons to wander the streets and avenues of the city you live in.
One of the first benefits to wandering your city is to your health. Whether you get around on foot, Rollerblade, or bicycle, all that exercise will only do you good. Another benefit to your health will be to your diet. As you get to know your city, you'll find better food to add to your diet. Any major city has farmer's markets, organic grocery stores, independent markets and the like. The more of these stores you find, the more healthy food you'll be able to add to your diet.
Another benefit is in getting to know your city. Every city has neighbourhoods with their own charms and amenities. One might have galleries, cafes, and brew pubs. Another might have shopping, restaurants, and beautifully restored buildings. A bike ride down a street you've never explored before might reveal the best wood fired pizza in town. And that's not counting the museums, coffee roasters, and specialty video stores that reside in hidden corners only local residents know about.
When you wander around town you get to know the nightlife, clubs, and smaller concert venues. Anyone with a basic knowledge of town knows where the bigger venues are. But what if you want to see someone other than Aerosmith? Sometimes your favorite indie bands will come to town. And when they do, they perform in little bars or nightclubs you would never know existed.
Indie bands are one thing, but what about events and festivals? Do you like street performers or beer festivals? What about those festivals where restaurants set up booths and offer samples of their tastiest dishes? A good knowledge of your city will keep you up to date on these goings on. You might think you only need to look at your local community papers to keep up on these things,
