Albany, Oregon http://cityofalbany.net is a quaint little town just 25 miles south of the state's capital, Salem, OR on I-5. It is nestled within the banks of the Willamette and Calapooia Rivers and is known for its historic buildings and Victorian houses. With top rated schools, its close proximity to Oregon State University, and many family friendly activities, Albany is a wonderful place to raise children. With the mildness of the seasons, you have many opportunities to get out and explore what the town has to offer even during the winter. In order to prevent your young ones from getting cabin fever during the cooler months and to celebrate the holiday season, you may want to take full advantage of what Albany has in store for you.

Check http://albanyvisitors.com for information on tours of Albany's historic homes. They offer guided and self tours. Also, the second Sunday in December many Victorian homes open their doors for a Christmas Parlor Tour. Here you will be able to explore the beauty and architecture of the homes and get into the spirit of the season by listening to the costumed carolers. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children and seniors. The kids will enjoy a wagon ride through the neighborhood and beverages to keep them warm along the way. All is included in the ticket price. From Dec. 1st through Jan. 1st the homes are fantastically lit with white Christmas lights. A quick evening stroll or drive through the downtown historic district will be sure to excite and delight the young and the young at heart.

Another memorable option for some family fun is visiting Vollstedt Farms. It is located only 1 mile from downtown Albany. Here they offer wagon rides to their field where you can choose and cut your own Christmas tree. They will offer you complimentary Wassail, hot chocolate and cookies when you return. You can also purchase Holly and Mistletoe to hang in your doorway. Nov. 28th through Dec. 20th more information can be found at http://nwtrees.com/oregon.htm.

Some indoor options for the family include the Albany Civic Theater http://albanycivic.org. During the winter season, they offer workshops and performances for kids with a group called You Thespians. Kids 14 and older can also learn about what goes on backstage during performances. If a movie is more your kids style, then head down to the Pix Theatre. Before 6pm, they open their doors to all ages for the classics as well as new movies. Have a lunch or early dinner at the Pix with a variety of snacks and refreshments including White Castle cheeseburgers. Last, but not least, be sure to check out the Albany Public Library. http://albanypubliclibrary.org. They offer daily activities for children and teens such as story time, arts and crafts, yoga, as well as a family fun festival.

Whatever your traditions are for the holiday season, there can be no shortage of activities and opportunities in Albany to help the whole family celebrate this magical time of year. The only problem will be which one to choose.
