Identifying and correcting bad driving habits

Driving is a set of habits that have been acquired. We must constantly practice to be safe, considerate drivers. We are sharing the road with others. Most of us want to reach our destination in a timely yet not hurried fashion. The poor driving habits that we might develop throughout the years can prove to be difficult to break. They can at best give us a good scare and at worst be fatal not only for ourselves but for others. The principle contributing factors in automobile accidents include distractions, fatigue, alcohol consumption, and speeding. Looking first at what you should not do, then at the best ways to deal with each of these situations, can help to create better driving habits.

-Don’t get distracted

There are many different ways in which a driver can become distracted. From answering a cell-phone to shouting at the kids, anything that takes our eyes off the road and our mind off driving can become a distraction. Before getting behind the wheel, consider what might distract you and prepare yourself for it.

*Turn the cell-phone off before the car is started.

*Have distracting material prepared for younger passengers (games, coloring, etc).

*Calm down after an argument before sitting in the driver's seat.

*Turn the GPS screen away and listen to the instructions.

*Focus your attention on the road, the mirrors and the instrument panel.

-Don’t drive tired or sleepy

From reacting more slowly to actually falling asleep at the wheel, being tired while driving can cause an accident. Even having a big meal before a trip can cause a driver to feel sleepy once the highway begins to roll by. Being rested before any drive will contribute to being more alert, no matter how quick or how long the trip.

*Sit and do nothing for a spell before driving to work.

*Have a serious rest before a longer trip.

*Stop and have a soft drink every two hours, use the toilet, freshen up.

*Keep an eye on traffic conditions and choose a time when traffic may be lighter.

*Digest a heavy meal for a good long time; maybe even have a short nap.

-Don’t drink and drive

Besides being illegal, driving while intoxicated, even just a little bit, is just not a good practice. A full 33% of deaths on the road involve a drunk driver. (iihs.org) Being part of these statistics is not the best way to end a night out with friends. Be considerate to yourself, those around you and those you are sharing the road with. Please don't drink then
