How to recover almost anything

The loss of computer data is often unexpected. Accidental deletion of data, computer failures, hardware problems, these are just some of the ways that computer data can be lost. It is however, possible to retrieve data in most circumstances. In fact, short of physical destruction of the hard drive, there are still ways that one can proceed with data recovery.

If it is something as simple as accidental deletion of data, data recovery is simple enough. Data that has recently been "deleted" may not get erased right away. They are stashed in the recycle bin for some time before the system deletes them. The exact timeframe data stays in your recycle bin depends on your computer settings. Retrieving data is a simple matter of clicking your recycle bin Icon and retrieving the file or files from there.

If the data you want retrieved is no longer in the recycle bin, it is still possible to retrieve them yourself. There are a number of data recovery software available for free that one can find on the web. These range from the user-friendly, simple ones which are only able to handle accidental deletion, to the ones that are able to recover data that has been lost when the computer has been reformatted.

Assuming that the cause of data loss is your computer being able to start, resulting in you unable to access your data, it is still possible to handle it on your own. If it is a software problem, you should still be able to boot your computer. Depending on the severity of the problem, it could range from something as simple as starting your computer in Safe mode, to having to reinstall your operating system or having to reformat the entire hard drive. Whatever the case, software problems can be handled and data recovered.

If it is a hardware problem, things are more complicated. Typically clicking or whirring sounds coming from your computer when you attempt to start it signify a hardware problem.

For the simple cases, it could just be something sitting on the wiring of the computer resulting in the power not being constant. These can be easily remedied by moving your furniture.

If it's not, then you'll likely have to seek the help of a professional. While one can certainly attempt to do this on our own, unless you expect to encounter situations where you have to recover data frequently, the investment in the equipment involved is not likely to be worth it. Most computer shops have someone who is able to engage in data recovery, and if they don't, they likely know someone who does. Ask at your local shop if you do encounter a problem that you can't troubleshoot.
