Poetry: Cancer

by Nanette Piotrowski

Created on: September 09, 2009   Last Updated: December 01, 2010

It's been a year now since you've been gone

it's been so hard for me to carry on

Every time I pick up the phone

I suddenly realize that you won't be home

Our Saturday night calls

that would last for six hours

I now spend in silence

and stare at your flowers

Things are just not the same

as I ponder on that

I think - what a shame

We'd solve the worlds problems

every single week

We'd laugh and cry til we could

hardly speak

You shared something you had read

and I'd tell a joke

We'd read our favorite comics

and giggle at those folks

Even though we were miles apart

those phone calls each week

always gave me heart

I'll always remember how we'd

close the call

you'd say, "I love you whole bunches,"

and I'd say, "I love you too Mom."

Writers note: My mother died from cancer of the brain, lungs and stomach. She died within one week of treatment and it was a horrible death. Mom was a published poet and wrote wonderful short stories. I hope some day to be as good as she was.
