I am from the South. Born and raised and I love it, wouldn't change it for the world. But, my mothers family id from the North, where she was born and raised.
Every other year we fly or drive to Illinois to visit. Let me tell you, its a little bit of cultural shock for me. Here in the South, we speak differently, eat differently and act differently. My grandma and grandpa saw I was eating a messy chilly dog and told me to eat it with a fork... I could have sworn I was looking at them with wide eyes, eat a hot dog with a fork, so I told them, we don't do that in the South.
I was supposed to stay there one Summer but I just couldn't take the differences, one thing is for sure, the weather, I'm so used to hot weather all through the Summer, but while I was there it was windy and cold.
One time I learned in school that people don't say Yes Ma'am and Yes Sir to there moms and dads, I think everybody in the class were in shock, wouldn't that be rude? So I went home that day and asked my mom if it was true and she told me yes, this brought a new perspective for me about the North, not a bad one, just that they were really different from us down in the South.
Girls up in the North also seem to be a little bit hesitant to get dirty while me and my friends down here would jump right into a huge puddle of mud if we could.
The food is also different, we down in the South eat a lotof fried stuff, a lot of it home cooked too. I love our food down here in the South. One big difference in the food, which brought me and my older brother's jaws down, they don't drink sweet tea! Every time we visit my family in the North, they have to make sweet tea just for us. In the South, we live on sweet tea.
Language, I was once in Texas to watch my brother graduate from basic training in the Air Force, we met this lady at out hotel who was also there to see her son graduate, I asked her,"So where y'all from?" She laughed and said she was from Alaska but she knew I was from the South because I said Y'all.
Bottom line, the North and the South are different, amazingly different, not any bettere just different.
