It of course depends on how long you have been together, and if you have already established what type of relationship it is. Lets face it- there are different boundaries in relationships, and you want to make sure your not over doing it. Below are some guidelines to follow and relationship time lines:
0-3 months of dating: The relationship is relatively new. Try to get him something you know he would enjoy like a PS2 RPG video game if hes into that, or sterling silver darts if you know he plays on a league every Thursday. At this stage, keep it simple, yet thoughtful. One gift- don't bombard him or he will think you are attempting to buy his love, or he may feel guilty or obligated to meet your high expectations.
3-9 months: If the relationship has been progressing nicely, as long as you can afford it, a nice watch, mens cologne, or jewelry (if he wears it) like a chain or bracelet. It shows you have nice taste and want to spoil him with your love. At this point, its safe to go a little more expensive.
9-12 months: The relationship has probably withstood a lot already, so a nice vacation, football tickets, power tools or an ipod would make a nice gift.
Always remember when buying a boy friend a gift is they like practicality- something they can use, not throw away in the corner and get dusty just because you gave it to him.
