There is as much room for innovation on the Internet as there is the number of cures yet to be discovered in medicine. Many creative people over the 16 years of the Internet's lifetime have came up with websites that have become extremely popular worldwide.
Websites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have all been used and talked about through word of mouth, or even in more public sources like the news. They rightfully deserve that recognition because they have created a place for social networking that no other website has done. Even after
MySpace was released to the public, it paved the way for its competitors to improve and innovate by adding new things that it hadn't thought of.
Similar to hundreds of real-life industries out there already that constantly renew and revamp their products, so does the Internet. It was over time that after the Internet was available to the public, that people started to make websites that would build on what it provided. Before, people had to rely on using e-mails for communication on-line. Now, there is a wider variety of avenues that people can use to communicate with each other. There's the common Twitter, but there's also Voice over IP programs like Ventrilo that allow you to talk through a mic to someone, sort of like speaking to someone.
The Internet is also a ripe breeding ground for itself. There are several programs available on the net like TweakUI that build on what you're already given. Despite not being as innovative as something like the social networking sites, it takes the everyday aspects of how you use the Internet and even your computer so that it's a better and more pleasant experience. Although designed for a more tech-savvy audience, it is very useful for almost anyone that would want to change how their experience on the computer goes to make life that much easier.
This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how the Internet has changed since 1993. As people get more comfortable with the technology, there will be no doubt that people will take what the Internet can offer to much higher heights. It's only a matter of time before someone looks at one of the cyber-giants we have now, and think of how they can top them. The Internet will continue to evolve just like how cars, medicine or computers industries constantly change and find new ways to improve their products.
