Grim
Farmers
Surveyed their
Apple orchards
Threatened by
Summer soaked rains
And gray cloudy days.
Without ideal growing seasons
Apples could not ripen
Juices would not sweeten.
Fall was coming
When fruit was harvested
Taken to markets
With puffy apple pies
And sweet spicy jellies.
Determined farmers walked
Among canopied orchards
Reaching high
Plucking apples
Polishing them on sleeves
Taking hopeful hearty bites
Smiling slowly.
There had been just enough sunshine to
Create perfect apples.
