Despite all its ups and downs, it appears that next year may see the women's movement finally achieve full status in America. As the presidential race heats up in 2007, two very powerful ... and totally different ... women activists have an excellent chance to oppose each other as leaders of their political parties in the history-making, all-woman election: Democrat Hillary Clinton vs Republican Condoleessa Rice.
Condoleessa Rice has the excellent educational and career background, but very little of the usual political experience for the job. Hillary Clinton, although a practicing attorney, opted early in her career to put aside her own ambitions to support her husband's long, hard drive from governor to president. Working behind the scenes for Bill Clinton in those years, Hillary gained enormous experience and influence that she is putting to great use today.
Therefore, anyone who feels the women's movement is over has just to look at the daily headlines for the next year and a half. And on that Wednesday morning in November 2008, there's an excellent chance they may see the one that begins .... She is now President of the United States.
