It has been many years since my childhood. But, the memories are vivid in my heart and mind as if they occurred yesterday. There are many wonderful experiences that are recalled fondly and certain memories that are not as pleasant , but, part of my history none the less.
My childhood was a happy one for the most part. I enjoyed being a kid, I had good friends, was given many material things, brought to numerous fun places and had two loving parents who thought the world of me. I joke around about being born old, not chronologically of course, but, as a child I tended to be more mature in my thinking than other children my age.
One Sleeping Experience I Won't Soon Forget
I was no more than two years old when a small fire broke out under my crib. It was an electrical fire that started from a small portable heater. I was sleeping soundly when I felt excessive heat around my face. I was sleeping on my stomach at the time. Luckily I woke up and thought this can't be good and went to the other side of the crib without getting burned., a miracle in itself. The flames were shooting up the side of the crib. My parents came in before disaster struck. My dad rescued me and the fire was extinguished. The memory is so vivid that in telling the story I could almost feel the heat permeating my surroundings. I do have a fear of fire to this day. Being burned to death in a fire is a fear I carry through life.
One Dinning Experience
Not long after that another traumatic experience occurred. I was not a good eater and my parents thought I might starve to death. One night after telling my mom No, I an not eating that. my dad decided to force me to eat. As the spoon filled with pastina (not a notorious choking food) but, I rebelled and refused which caused me to choke and turn blue. My dad jumped up and grabbed me by the ankles and hit me on the back to release the larged food ( This was before the Heimlich Maneuver became the ideal choking remedy.) The kitchen table went flying and my hands and arms were swinging back and forth as I gasped for air. Luckily the food was released and I was able to breathe once again.
One Day At The Beach
We lived near the beach and my mom took me there for fun in the sun. Most of the time nothing eventful happened except for the occasional sunburn( pre sun screen days) and a few bug bites. On one beautiful sunny July day my mom and I ventured into the water. A fierce wave literally picked me up and tossed me like a rag doll into the mighty sea.
