Everything you need for your new baby

Having a baby launches you into a web of advertising and well-meaning advice on what you must have for the arrival of your newborn. Need implies that something is actually required, and not just wanted. For the sake of this article, I will take a more liberal version of need and include things that are especially nice to have, but will leave out the ridiculous, and simplify the process of preparing for a newborn.

Carseat - Unless you are in a position to rely completely on public transport you must have a carseat. There are hundreds to choose from, and make sure you are aware of the safety standards for your state. Many people prefer their portable capsule style car seats, but it is possible and may be more economic to get a convertible car seat that will suit your child from birth until 4 years of age. Make sure you have the car seat installed in your car ahead of time. Most hospitals will walk you out and make sure you have a car seat before they let you take your little one home.

Diapers - Cloth or disposable is an argument for another day, but make sure you have lots of either one. Newborn babies go through 7-10 diapers each day. This will settle down a little bit by the time they are 3 months old, but the bottom line is they will be in constant demand for the next 2 years. Make sure you have a 2 week supply of disposables at a minimum and for cloth diapers, 4 days. It is not reasonable to think you are going to manage to wash them every day. If you can afford it, a diaper service can be a fantastic alternative. It is also worthwhile to have a tube of diaper rash cream handy. You don't have to have a specific diaper changing table, but you do need to have a designated spot for doing this job, and lining it with a large soft bath towel can help keep any messes easy to clean up.

Clothing - Newborns need simple, easy to change clothing that is comfortable for them. It is great to have some "going out" outfits for pictures and special occasions, but for day to day wear, jumpsuit style pajamas are great. Combine with little undershirts and a hat if it is cold. If you live in a warmer climate, then onsies (t-shirts that snap between the legs) are wonderful. Plan on having enough clothing for 3-4 outfits per day, and at least a 3 day supply.

Stroller - Having a stroller or baby buggy of some variety is a huge blessing. It is so much fun to carry your tiny baby around at first, but they get heavy in a hurry, and require lots of stuff, and having a good stroller
