Historic York


People may associate York with the Vikings as they invaded in 866 AD however it dates all the way back to the Romans as they founded the city in about 71 AD. Jumping all the way to the 20th century and the Second World War York suffered its worst air raid. We are now in the 21st century and it still stands today with its historic past.



There is a vast amount of history that is situated in the city of York. In the heart of Yorkshire is a large Medieval Gothic cathedral named York Minister it is not to be missed on your visit to the city. With its amazing architecture, beautiful stained glass windows and the vast amounts of space that take you back in time. If you are not familiar with the history of the place and want to know more about it then you may want to join a free guided tour. There is also a chance to see the breathtaking city at the top of the 'Central Tower'.

Family York

There are also many attractions for the family such as the York Dungeon for a dark and gruesome time back in history when it was a Roman city. There is plenty to keep you entertained and on edge with its live actors, special effects and shows. For an experience like this you have to be brave enough as it is based on the real life events of the past and you will witness fear, torture, death and pain.

Interested in the Viking history of York? Then the Jorvik Viking Centre you should visit as everything in the centre is archaeological proof that the Vikings did exist in York. York Archaeological Trust built the Jorvik Viking Centre on the exact place that they famously dug they recreated a Viking city that helped visitors all over the world to see how they lived. You can witness the smells of the cooking, the language of the people, how the craftsmen used to work and the physical arrangement of the houses at which they lived in. This will be a mesmerising visit for all the family which will keep you talking about it for years to come.

The National Railway Museum is a fun free day out for all the family. Delve into the three very large halls which are bulging with railway life. The most famous trains are situated here which include the fastest steam locomotive in the world, the Chinese locomotive which is one of the biggest ever built in Britain and the Japanese Bullet Train. There are daily displays you can watch, you can witness the trains move on the turntable and you may want to learn how to command the signals with professionals
