Whether or not we call them cry babies or distractions to a team, very few teams in the NFL have Wide Receivers with the talent and skill of both Terrell Owens and Randy Moss. And though the actions and personalities of players at this level can be a detriment, it's hard to argue their value. The reason such players remain in the league is because they are elevated beyond others in their position.
At this elevated level, which of the two exceeds even the talents of his counterpart in the realm of greatness as the best receiver? In order to make this determination you have to go beyond the numbers, and identify their intangibles and their overall affect during their careers.
Statically both receivers are fairly close in all the important categories. Both players have had the opportunity to play in the Big Game, and in both cases, they were instrumental in their respective teams victories. Both receivers are big targets, with Randy Moss standing at about 6'4 210 pounds and Terrell Owens standing at about 6'3 at 224 pounds.
For countering defenses, both receivers require double teams in order to skew their impact on games, because anything less would amount to additional footage on their highlight reels. There is no question in the distinction between these two receivers and other receivers in the NFL.
The distinction between Moss and Owens, though few in numbers, is what forms my opinion of whose better. For instance, all wide receivers on certain plays have to be prepared to block for successful runs plays or pass plays. Terrell Owens without a doubt is the better blocker. We've seen him run down the field as a blocker to ensure the runner has every advantage at making it to the end zone.
Between both players Terrell Owens undoubtedly was and is the better route runner. Check out the video on YouTube where Terrell Owens runs a route in practice against CB Adam Jones, there you will see just how much corners had to deal with when defending T.O.
There is no question, about the skill of Randy Moss; however during his 2 years in Oakland, Moss appeared to be nothing more than a shadow of his former self. All of his numbers were modest gaining only 11 total TD's, with about 102 total catches, which averages out to about 5 touchdowns and about 51 receptions, which in fairness are not bad numbers for wide receivers.
The individual talent of Moss in my opinion was limited to the landscape of his team. However, regardless of where he played, Terrell Owens performed at a high level which just leads me to believe he's a better individual talent.
Terrell Owens and Randy Moss are both two elite players at the top when it comes to wide receivers. To be honest, to have either player on a team is a great asset for that team. I'd have both players on any team I own because of the impact I know both players would have on the field. But when comparing elite player against elite player, the intangibles of Terrell Owens is what separates him from Randy Moss.
