Freelance writers enjoy many benefits including being able to work from home and work flexible hours. There are many good reasons to freelance write versus working full-time for an employer. These are just some of the many advantages of freelance writing.
1) Work from Home
The greatest benefit for most freelance writers is the ability to work from home. Working from home is comfortable (no need to get out of those pajamas) and also convenient. Being able to work from the park with a laptop on a summer day is a lot nicer than being stuck in an office cubicle.
2) Flexible Schedule
Because freelance writers can pick and choose their own projects to build their own workloads, how much they work and what hours they commit to working is up to them. Moms who freelance can schedule their work around caring for their children. Students who freelance can schedule their jobs around classes. Part-time freelance writers can even continue a full-time job and schedule writing jobs around their full-time hours.
3) No Boss
Freelance writers are ultimately their own bosses. They don't have anyone standing over them making sure they're getting their jobs done or interrupting each task they're working on with a more important one. They don't have to worry about getting in trouble with the boss for taking an extra break or making a personal phone call.
4) Freedom of Choice
Freelancers have the ultimate freedom of choice. It is ultimately the writer's choice which jobs to take and which to decline. A freelancer can always choose to not do further jobs for problem clients. Freelancers also have the ability to set their own rates and can choose to not take jobs that don't pay a satisfactory amount.
5) No Commuting
Writers who work from home don't have to commute. The time and money saved on driving and parking or taking the train is often substantial. The extra hours per week add up fast, and the money saved can always be put to better use.
6) Lots of Opportunities
Especially now that so many businesses and publications have online presences, there are many opportunities for finding work as a freelance writer. Many websites seek content writers, and the majority of these jobs go to freelance writers. Freelance writers are needed for all kinds of writing jobs, from magazine writing to technical writing to business writing. It is much easier to find work as a freelance writer than it is to find work in many other work-from-home professions, because the demand for freelance writers is so high.
7) Many Markets to Choose From
No matter what kind of writing a freelancer enjoys, there are available markets. Publications like Writers Market offer only a fraction of the thousands of markets freelancers can write for. Freelancers can write for magazines, newspapers, or online publications. Or, they can write for businesses by doing corporate or legal writing. Freelance writers are needed to write business plans, website content, articles, essays, advertisements, resumes, greeting card copy, and hundreds of other types of writing. Freelance writers can easily find as much work as they want in whatever areas they choose.
