Setting: A Midwestern day in autumn.
Cast: Robin, the father; Glenn, the oldest son; and Benjamin (Benny), the youngest son
[Light comes up on Robin, a man in his mid-thirties, he is dressed for mid-west autumn. Jeans and a plain tee-shirt, he wards off the wind with a faded denim jacket. In his hand he holds a rake. Before him is a pile of leaves heaped nicely. He feverishly rakes the leaves in a preoccupied manner.]
Robin: "Glenn! Come on and get that rake and help me will ya?!"
(Off stage) "I can't find it!"
Robin (annoyed): "It's right next to the lawn mower!"
(Off stage) "I can't find it!"
Robin (insistence): "Up on the hook!"
(Off stage) "I CAN'T FIND IT!"
[Robin drops his rake in disgust and starts to exit.]
(Off stage) "Ohhh, found it!"
[Robin stops and shakes his head.]
Robin (to himself): "Boy would lose his head if it weren't attached."
[He picks the rake back up and continues his work]
(Off stage): "Whooosshh! [whistles] Whoosshhh!"
[Little Benny jumps on stage in a world all his own. He is dressed in tights, shorts, and a homemade tee-shirt decorated with a large "B." He wears swim goggles, and a bed sheet for a cape.]
Benny (arms stretched out like an airplane): "Whoosshhh!"
Robin: "What ya doing Benny?"
[Benny stops and poses with his fists on his hips.]
Benny: "I'm not Benny, I'm the great Bennn-Ja-Mannn!"
(Robin chuckles to himself) Robin: "Well Benjamin, what are you doing with those swimming goggles on?"
Benny: "They keep the bugs out of my eyes when I'm flying."
Robin: "Well you better get inside before mom sees you with her good sheet around your neck."
Benny: "This isn't a sheet it's a super duper invisibility cape."
Robin: "Then why can I see you?"
(Benny takes hold of the cape and gives Robin a serious, but sincere look.)
Benny: "Because I haven't turned it on yet."
Robin: (chuckling) "Go play Benny."
[Benny extends his arms and "flies" off stage.]
Benny: Whoosh, (whistling) Whooshhh!
[Cue: Wind sound, stage hand tosses leaves stage left.]
[Glenn enters from stage right, rake in hand. He wears a pair of carpenter pants, plaid work shirt and a 70's rock group tee-shirt. He braces for a strong wind as he meets his father at the pile.]
Robin: "Nice for you to join the fun."
Glenn: "Whatever."
[Glenn begins raking the leaves as another handful is tossed on stage.]
Robin: "Strong wind eh?"
Glenn: "Yeah shouldn't we wait to to do this?"
Robin: "Glenn I don't ask you to do much..."
Glenn: "Okay okay, I get it. Be a part of the family. No need
