The onset of motherhood does not specifically mean the complete end to writing. By "writing" I am referring to a career in writing. Becoming a mother may, in some cases, be the very reason many women start writing. Motherhood and writing are copacetic. In other words, they go together beautifully.

One of the first gifts that we receive, as a mother, is a baby album. We begin to write down everything, starting with pregnancy. When the baby is born, we begin to write down birth information, growing stages, the arrival of teeth, and so much more. We want to capture every moment on paper. We are not writing a best-selling novel, but we are writing.

As our children grow, and enter school years, we write even more. Mothers with more children may find it difficult to find time to write, but writing continues. We write notes in our children's lunches, we write silly poems to our husbands, and we write letters at Christmas, telling everyone what our crazy, dysfunctional family has been up to.

Creative moms will find time to write no matter what their family size is. Journals will be purchased - one for each child. In each journal the creative mom writes down every positive thing that happens. Something funny they said, something nice they did, or something crazy and out of place they did - it all gets written down. She, with tears in her eyes, wraps it up for her child's graduation present.

Then there are moms who record every strange and hilarious happening on paper - the situations you want to keep to yourself but you don't. Your novel slowly gets written with real situations, names and places changed of course to protect the innocent. Snickering, you sneak off to your bedroom to write the most current affair down.

When we are not writing a book or novel, we are writing throughout motherhood. We are experienced with long, drawn out e-mails to teachers explaining why Johnny forgot to do his homework. We write out checks for fund raisers, school fees, and other activities. We write a million sticky notes to ourselves, because we've just about lost our minds by dinner time.

After we have had our "What was I thinking" moment, over and over, we reclaim more of our personal time. Eventually, if not at the moment, we regain more time to write. We never stop writing; motherhood wouldn't be so much fun without it.
