Natural remedy treatments for bloating

Everyone at some time or another has that feeling of being bloated. It could be due to the types of foods we eat or with women the time of the month. Others it could be because of a disruption in their digestive system. So the advice given would have to depend on the person, their current health status and personal situation.

In the case of some it could be to do with the regularity of their bowels, how often do they pass a motion, what is the consistency of the motion and what is their diet like? This can give some indication as to how one can offer advice on a herbal treatment. Firstly; how much water do they drink? It is important to drink at least three litres of clear water a day. This helps to keep the body hydrated right down to the single cells within our bodies. To test how hydrated a person is you only need to look and feel their skin. The skin will look shrivelled, a bit like a dried prune, and inelastic (does not go straight back down but stays peaked up). This shows that not enough water is being consumed, having an impact on how hard or soft the motion will be. In the case of constipation, one can easily tell not enough water is being consumed as none is being excreted via this route but being absorbed by the body and used for general use, sweating and being passed in urine.

Secondly; what types of foods are being eaten? Does the person eat enough roughage, in the form of vegetables and pulses? These help to add bulk to the motions, making them more formed when passed. Do they cook all their own foods from scratch or are most pre-package or cooked? Making a meal from scratch does not take any longer and ensures you have all the goodness of the foods you have used (unless they are over cooked). This does not mean you have to cook gourmet foods all the time, but buy fresh food to prepare and cook yourself. At this time you can add herbs which will help with digestion like fennel and mint.

Thirdly; has the digestive system been suffering this problem for a time? If the answer is yes then you might need to have a preparation that can restore the digestive system to its normal state. By this I mean re-instating the normal flora to the system. For this I would suggest Slippery Elm, which is mucilage (re-coats the mucus membranes in the body, like the digestive system). This will return the whole digestive system from mouth to anus to its norm. Bringing back the normal flora, this is resident in all our systems
